Liz is a fully qualified teacher and trainer with many years experience of working with children, young people and adults. As a Biologist with a special interest in the brain, she initially taught Science in High Schools then on an adult ‘Access’ course for Health Professionals. Liz has always pursued ‘brain friendly’ ways of teaching, training as a Hamlyn Fellow with the University of the First Age, and then with neuroscientist, Roy Paget from the British Academy of Advanced Training.
Specialising in Gifted and Talented Education, Liz trained further with ‘Sapere’ to deliver ‘Philosophy for Children’, and with author Barbara Bell to deliver the Minimus Primary Latin project. During her time as an Advisory Teacher, Liz developed ‘confidence building’ transition materials for schools and trained classroom teachers to use the specialist packs provided. She has also more recently supported the educational needs of children in specialist ‘foster care’ placements, developing further ‘Learning Brain’ materials in the process.
As a Masters level trainer of adults, Liz has written and delivered numerous courses, including ‘Group Facilitation’, and ‘Confidence Building’; also providing the Level 3 Award in Education and Training for those wishing to enter the teaching profession. She has a management qualification from the Institute of Leadership and Management and spent several years as the Development Manager for a local Parenting Strategy. Liz trained further with Parenting UK to become a ‘Trainer of Parent Educators’ and has experience of delivering specialist material for parents and the facilitators of parenting programmes.
Nowadays, Liz is passionate about using all her training and experience to support the personal development of adults and children through a range of carefully designed and ‘manageable’ pockets of learning. There are ‘Learning Pockets’ for everyone, including parents, teachers, community organisations and businesses, all of which have at their core, the opportunity to build confidence and self-esteem and this can also be achieved through bespoke courses on application.
Why we exist?
I left school with virtually no qualifications and the feeling that I was a failure somehow, because I never came up to the academic expectations of others. Yet I loved learning! The two didn’t seem to go together, but it took many years for me to discover what the problem was. When I did, it was a huge relief to find that it didn’t have to be that way!
It was only as an adult that I discovered what it feels like to be successful. Finally gaining a couple of degrees, and a string of other professionally linked accreditations and qualifications gave me back the confidence I had lost as a young person. Since then, it has given me a great deal of pleasure to support all kinds of people aged 7-70, to gain the confidence they need to become a more successful learner.
I initially started to write a book about my experiences in the hopes that this would encourage an even wider audience to take the plunge into learning so as to grow and develop further as individuals. The book in turn started to influence the way I planned and delivered courses, eventually leading to the idea that what people really needed was a series of manageable pockets of learning. This is how the Learning Pockets idea came into being.
When delivering courses directly with groups of learners, I have always striven for those individuals to be immersed in a quality environment that provides the message that they are worth any amount of effort on my part. All the Learning Pockets provided (whether they are delivered on a one to one basis, with a group, or written as a self-help booklet), strive to provide the same message. The ‘Pocketful’ experience is therefore rarely subject-specific, it is more about becoming a confident learner!
Our core values
Why it Works
Engaging the whole person in their learning has always been central to my way of working and invariably produces an enthusiastic response from participants. Only individuals who have been moved by what they have learned will make the kind of progress they deserve from the time and money invested in the experience. I speak very much to the mind and heart of the individual so that they can make the information their own and grow from it. This is why most of the Learning Pockets are designed to help people get to know themselves, specifically as a ‘learner’ and to leave behind any previous negative experiences of ‘education’.
Individuals who have taken my courses are often full of excitement about the future and what they can ‘do’ now, armed with the information provided. They comment on how much they have been encouraged to think more deeply about their own responses to things and feel inspired to carry on developing as a learner. I genuinely hope that the Learning Pockets experience does the same for you.
